How Education Breaks the Cycle of Poverty in Jakarta Kampungs
In the kampungs of Jakarta, there are children who are bright, motivated and eager to learn. Yet many fall behind in school, drop out early, or never get the chance to reach their potential. Not due to a lack of talent, but because of concrete material barriers that we can remove.
What are the barriers to education in the kampung?
The most direct barrier is money. School uniforms, books, pens and notebooks cost money that many kampung families simply do not have. A school bag can be the difference between attending school and staying home. Then there is the quality of the learning environment. Many informal learning spaces in the kampungs are overcrowded, poorly lit, and lack sufficient teaching materials.
Teacher training is another major bottleneck. Teachers in kampung schools are often motivated but do not always have access to modern teaching methods or continuing education. This directly affects the quality of learning that children receive.
What does Future Kampung do for education?
We start with the most concrete needs. We provide school supplies to children who cannot afford them: books, notebooks, pens, bags. We support teachers with training and teaching materials. We help create better learning spaces in the kampungs.
But we also look further. Education in the kampung is often a link in a larger chain of poverty. A child who does not go to school, works. A child who works, has fewer opportunities later. We try to break that chain by focusing on continuity: long-term support, not a one-time donation.
What is the impact of education on poverty?
Researchers agree: every additional year of schooling significantly increases a child's future income. Girls who stay in school longer marry later and have fewer children, improving the overall health of the family. Educated young people can find better work, contribute to the community, and serve as role models for younger generations.
In the kampungs of Jakarta, we see this every day. A child with the right school supplies goes to school with more confidence. A teacher who has received good training inspires their class differently. And a class that is inspired, changes lives.
