Annual Flooding in Jakarta: Why Kampung Communities Need Your Help
Jakarta is one of the most flood-prone cities in the world. Every year, usually between December and February, large parts of the city are hit by heavy rainfall and flooding. The consequences are felt hardest in the kampungs: informal residential areas often located on low ground near rivers and railway lines.
Why are kampung families most vulnerable?
Kampung residents have little buffer. They live in small houses that offer poor protection against water. Many families have no savings to repair damage. Insurance is rare. And when the water rises, there is barely time to save belongings. Food, clothing, school supplies and sometimes entire household contents are lost within hours.
Then they wait. For government help that is slow to arrive. For donations that do not always find their way to the most affected neighbourhoods. For neighbours and volunteers who are sometimes the only direct help they receive.
How does Future Kampung respond to floods?
Future Kampung works with local contacts in Jakarta kampungs. We are present before a flood happens. We know the families, the neighbourhood leaders, and the specific vulnerabilities of each area. When the water rises, we can respond quickly.
Our emergency aid consists of food packages with rice, oil, sugar, flour, noodles, and coffee. We distribute clean drinking water. We help families find temporary shelter and provide hygiene products that are essential during flooding.
Speed matters
The difference between a 24-hour and a 72-hour response is enormous. Within 24 hours we can prevent children from going days without food. We can prevent families from using unsafe drinking water. We can help people secure their most valuable possessions.
Support our emergency fund
With a donation to Future Kampung you support our emergency fund that is available year-round. We do not have to wait for grants or fundraising campaigns when the water rises. Your donation is ready.
